The molds that affect us, also affect our pets.
What is mold? Mold is a type of fungus that can be found anywhere and is comprised of small organisms, allowing it to grow. It can be found outdoors as well as indoors, and can impact both you and your pet in negative ways. Below are some common molds and signs that your pets may have mold exposures that are stressing them.
Common Molds and What to Look For
Aspergillus– Aspergillus can be found in the air, in ventilation systems, and in areas where there has been water damage. Exposure to this mold has been known to cause allergic reactions as well as respiratory issues. Aspergillus exposure may lead to an infection and has been known to weaken the immune system.
Alternaria– Alternaria is a mold most commonly found in bathrooms and on windows that are known for getting damp. It can cause allergic reaction as well as respiratory issues. It is the most common allergenic mold.
Penicillium– Penicillium grows in moist areas. This bluish-green mold can cause allergic reactions. It is an airborne mold, which can also lead to immune and respiratory issues.
Mucor– Mucor is commonly seen due to materials that have been damaged by water, such as carpets and mattresses. It is commonly white or gray and can contribute to allergic-type reactions. However, one species of mucor is known to cause fungal infection.
Stachybotrys– Stachybotrys can be found in damp areas, including ventilation systems. A couple species of stachybotrys are commonly known as ‘black mold’. Excess moisture and poor quality of indoor air allow this mold to grow.
Common Signs of Mold Exposure and Toxicity
- wheezing
- coughing
- difficulty breathing
- nose bleed
- runny nose
- typical signs of allergic reactions
- scratching
- chewing on skin
- excessive licking
- excessive fatigue
- appetite loss
- bleeding from the lungs
