Heart Health and Your Pet

The health of a beloved pet is important to an owner. Knowing how to take care of a pet and knowing signs of concern can help keep a pet both healthy and happy!

The heart is a major organ responsible for pumping blood throughout the body, transporting oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, and carrying away carbon dioxide and waste products. It’s definitely an organ that needs to be kept in ship shape.

So how can we help a pet’s heart?

How to Keep Your Pet’s Heart Healthy

  1. Feed Your Pet a Healthy Diet: Feeding your pet a healthy diet is essential for good heart health. It is most ideal to feed your pet a raw food diet that coincides with their ancestral needs. So for dogs, that of ancestral canines and for cats, that of ancestral felines. If raw food is not possible, the next best choice is freeze-dried pet food followed by canned pet foods, and lastly, dried kibble. If you feed your pet dried kibble, adding fresh foods to your dog or cat’s diet can help. For dogs, leafy veggies, berries, fatty fish, and heart organs are great choices! The ancestral diet of the feline is strictly carnivorous. Adding fatty fish and heart organs would be a great addition to kitty’s diet!
  2. Give Your Pet Plenty of Exercise: Exercise your pet on a regular basis. Dogs should get at least one walk a day, if not more. And depending on the age and breed of your pooch, more exercise may be necessary. This could include playing fetch, swimming, jogging, or doing agility, to name a few. Remember, getting your furry friend out for some needed exercise gets you out too. Although most pet cats are indoor companions, they need exercise as well. Don’t allow your cat to get bored. Keep kitty busy with toys to chase and places to climb.
  3. Good Dental Hygiene: There is a connection between oral health and the heart! If there is an infection in a tooth or the gums this infection can travel through the blood affecting other organs. Feeding your pet a healthy diet and brushing their teeth regularly can prevent oral infections.
