Entertaining Your Feline Friend: Outdoor Cat Enclosures

When we think of our cats and their needs, the first things that come to mind are food, water, and shelter, all physical needs. But cats need mental stimulation as well. A great way to make sure their need for stimulation is being met is through the use of an outdoor cat enclosure. It is not recommend that cats be let outside without any protection due to the fact that they have a number of predators. Some of these predators are coyotes, foxes, raccoons, birds of prey, weasels, and dogs. To ensure that your feline friend can enjoy the great outdoors in a safe but fun environment, a very simple or extravagant kitty enclosure can be built or purchased. Here are some things to consider…

1. Space: What kind of yard space do you have? How much of your yard do you want to use for your cat enclosure? Do you want a cat enclosure that is movable or permanent? Really take the time to think about what will be best for both you and your cat.

2. Cats are Climbers: Cats love to climb! Creating steps and ramps can help fulfill this need.

3. Cats Like Solitude: Many cats are very solitary and need a space where they can escape, whether it’s from children, the family dog, or other cats. Creating a quiet box for them to crawl into can give them this time alone.

4. A Room (or Perch) With a View: A perch can also function as a quiet space for a cat. If it is high up, they will not be disturbed when needing that alone time. It also offers them a good vantage point for seeing what is going on in their outdoor environment.

5. Cat’s Walk: This is an area that typically runs along a fence or house. It is essentially a tunnel made of fencing. A cat’s walk or run allows your cat to move from their main enclosure to some different areas of the yard (see picture below).
